Service changes in Sunderland and Washington - from 26 January 2025

We’re making some changes to our services in Sunderland and Washington from 26 January 2025. The changes include several new links across the area as well as timetable changes to make services more reliable.
What’s new?
- More buses for Pennywell – we’re doubling the number of buses.
- Super-frequent buses on the Grangetown-Sunderland route.
- Ryhope Green to Sunderland passengers can now conveniently travel every 7-8 minutes.
All areas currently served will continue to benefit from Go North East bus services.
Full timetables will soon be available on our website.

We will be hosting eight roadshows in Sunderland and South Tyneside. Please come along if you would like to pick up a new timetable or chat to GNE staff about the service changes and how to plan your journey.

Services 61 & 62/A - Pennywell – Sunderland – Grangetown – Doxford/Peterlee/Murton
Service’s 39, 39A & 39B will be withdrawn, however replacements are provided by the revised 61 and new 62 & 62A.
Service 61: Will operate up to every 30 minutes between Pennywell, Sunderland City Centre, Winter Gardens, Grangetown, Hollycarrside, Ryhope and Murton, with one journey each hour extending to Peterlee.
Service 62/A: Will operate up to every 30 minutes between Pennywell, Sunderland City Centre, Winter Gardens, Grangetown, Hollycarrside, Ryhope and Doxford International.
These changes will significantly improve travel options for customers in Pennywell, with the number of buses doubled, with enhanced links to Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Service 63 - Sunderland – Ryhope – Silksworth
Service 2 will no longer operate beyond Sunderland to Silksworth, replacement service 63 will continue to operate between Sunderland and Silksworth via Ryhope Village Green.
This service will operate up to every 15 minutes, with a revised timetable to improve reliability.
Customers travelling between Sunderland and Grangetown will benefit from up to 14 buses each way, every hour- offering a truly “turn up and go” service. This includes up to 8 buses every hour direct from Sunderland Winter Gardens.
Customers travelling from Ryhope Green to Sunderland can benefit from a bus every 7-8 minutes with services 60 and 63.
Service 60 - Sunderland – Ryhope – Parkside
Minor timetable changes to evening journeys to improve service reliability. Customers travelling from Ryhope to Sunderland can benefit from a bus every 7-8 minutes with services 60 and 63.
Services 35 and 36 - Sunderland – Boldon – Jarrow – Lukes Lane
Service 35: This service has been revised to operate an hourly route connecting Sunderland, Hylton Castle, Boldon, Fellgate, and Jarrow. This service will provide new links between Fellgate and Sunderland on Monday-Saturday.
Customers boarding on York Avenue will benefit from buses up to every 15 minutes with services 9, 25 and 35.
The section of the route between Sunderland and Low Moorsley will be covered by service 32.
Service 36: This service will operate an hourly route connecting Sunderland, Hylton Castle, Boldon, Jarrow, and Lukes Lane, with new links from Cotswolds Estate to Jarrow.
Services 35 and 36 will offer a combined frequency of every 30 minutes between Sunderland and Boldon Asda.
Service 2 - Sunderland – Barnwell Estate – Washington
This service has been revised to run every 20 minutes on an amended route in Barnwell.
Service 2A will be withdrawn and service 2 will continue to serve Barnwell.
This service no longer serves Biddick or Shiney Row:
- Customers in Biddick should use services 4 or 84/85 to connect at Washington Galleries.
- Customers in Shiney Row should use services X1 and 4 to Washington Galleries, or 78 to Sunderland.
- Service 8 will continue to provide a direct link from Fatfield to Sunderland
Barnwell Estate and Harraton customers will benefit from more frequent buses, up to every 20 minutes.
The section of route between Sunderland, Grangetown and Silksworth will be served by routes 61, 62/A and 63.
Service 9 - North Shields – Jarrow – Sunderland
Minor timetable changes to improve service reliability. Customers boarding on York Avenue will benefit from buses up to every 15 minutes with services 9, 25 and 35.
Service 24 - South Shields – Sunderland
Minor timetable changes to improve reliability.
Service 32 - Sunderland Docks – City Centre – Low Moorsley
This service replaces the Sunderland – Low Moorsley section of the 35/35A, as well as the Sunderland City Centre – Sunderland Docks section of service 33.
The revised timetable will improve reliability for customers.
Service 33 - Sunderland – Silksworth
Minor timetable changes to improve reliability, with the section between City Centre and Sunderland Docks now operated by service 32.
The service will now operate hourly on evenings and Sundays, replacing equivalent journeys on service 35A.
