Revisions to fares from 2 January 2025

1 month ago Fri 13th Dec 2024

Price changes 2025

From 2 January 2025 there will be changes to our fares. Since January 2023, most adult single fares have been capped by the UK Government at £2. From January, single fares will be capped at £2.50 across almost all bus services in Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Northumberland.

This new fare cap is being funded jointly by the North East Combined Authority’s (NECA), Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), and the Department for Transport’s National Bus Fare Cap grant (NBFC)

Cheap fares for under-22s funded by NECA will be unchanged – the £1 single and £3 day ticket will continue to provide excellent value for money bus and Metro travel for young people.

The sections below provide more detail for each type of fare.

Adult Singles

Most adult single fares will increase from £2 to £2.50, though some short hop fares will be less than £2.50.

A small number of fares will be capped at £3.00 instead of £2.50 – these will be for journeys into Teesside on service X10 and journeys into Cumbria on service 681.

Single tickets will still be available through the Go North East app at £2.50 each, or as value bundles of five tickets for £12.50 or ten tickets for £25.

If you want to know the price of your single or return fare from 2 January, you can:

  • Use Go North East’s journey planner in our app or on our website (fares will be updated from 2 January)
  • Contact our Customer Services team on 0191 420 5050*, or
  • Ask your driver when you travel on or after the 2 January. If you choose to buy your tickets on the bus, remember to tell the driver your destination so you pay the correct fare.

*Available Monday to Friday, 9-5

Adult Returns

Most adult return fares will increase from £4 to £5, with some shorter journeys costing less than £5. Adult return tickets for travel into Teesside on the X10 or into Cumbria on the 681 will be capped at £6.00.

For journeys entirely within County Durham, return tickets will no longer be sold. Customers making two or more journeys in a day can take advantage of the Durham Day Rover ticket, priced at £4, which provides significant savings over multiple single tickets.

In Northumberland, the Northumberland Day Rover (priced at £5) often matches the price of a return fare, making it the best value option for many trips.

Day tickets

Go North East day tickets will change in price from 2 January 2025. Most multi-operator day tickets, including Explorer tickets, will stay at their current prices.

These tickets can be bought in the Go North East app or from the bus driver.

24-hour, Duo and evening fares

From 2 January, our Duo tickets will be simpler and more flexible. Instead of separate Duo tickets for different fare zones, there will be one Duo ticket valid across the Go North East local bus network (except on the X10, X50, or 327).

This revised Duo ticket will be priced at £13.00 and will for two adults travelling together on Mondays to Fridays after 09:30, or any time on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. The Duo ticket is only available in the Go North East app.

From 2 January, Go North East’s 24-hour and evening tickets will be withdrawn due to very low usage of these ticket types. We will also no longer offer the flat-fare tap-on after 7pm – from 2 January, any fares after 7pm should be bought in the Go North East app or from the bus driver in the usual way.

Any 24-hour or evening tickets purchased in the app before 2 January 2025 will still be valid until 30 June 2025. After this date, they will no longer be accepted for travel.
