Disruption to our services in Gateshead from 21 June until 16 July

From the evening of 21 June until early morning on 16 July, Five Bridges Roundabout will be fully closed while Gateshead Council work on the demolition of the flyover. 

During this period many Go North East services in the Gateshead area will be rerouted, with diversions split into four main corridors; Sunderland Road, Old Durham Road, Durham Road, and Split Crow Road. Beyond Gateshead, services across our network may also experience delays due to traffic caused by the works.

There will be a free shuttle bus to keep stops on Sunderland Road and Old Durham Road connected to Heworth and Gateshead Interchanges, you can find out more about this service below.

We have been working hard to mitigate the impacts the demolition will cause to customer journeys.

Diverted Services 

Sunderland Road services (service 27): 

Westbound (Towards Gateshead/ Newcastle)

  • Services will be diverted between Heworth Interchange and Gateshead Jackson Street. There will be no service to stops between these points.
  • If you normally use these bus stops, please use either the stops on the diverted route (Abbotsford Road-Eastern Court and Felling By-Pass-Park Road (Gateshead Stadium), or our free shuttle bus that is detailed at the bottom of this article.

Eastbound (Away from Gateshead/ Newcastle)

  • Services will be diverted between Gateshead Jackson Street and Heworth Interchange. There will be no service to stops between these points.
  • If you normally use these bus stops, please use either the stops on the diverted route (Felling By-Pass-Park Road (Gateshead Stadium), Abbotsford Road-Green Lane and Abbotsford Road-Brewery Lane), or our free shuttle bus that is detailed at the bottom of this article. 
     

Old Durham Road services (28, Cityrider 56, 57, 85A):

Northbound (Towards Gateshead/ Newcastle)

  • Services will be diverted between Old Durham Road-Shotley Gardens and Gateshead High Street. There will be no service to stops between these points.
  • If you normally use these bus stops, please use either the stops on the diverted route (Dryden Road-Lynnholme Gardens, Durham Road-Shipcote Lane, Durham Road-Hartington Street and High West Street-Bewick Road), or our free shuttle bus that is detailed at the bottom of this article.

Southbound (Away from Gateshead/ Newcastle)

  • Services will be diverted between Gateshead High Street and Old Durham Road-High Fell Club. There will be no service to stops between these points.
  • If you normally use these bus stops, please use either the stops on the diverted route (Prince Consort Road-Bewick Road, Gateshead Library and Dryden Road-Lynnholme Gardens), or our free shuttle bus that is detailed at the bottom of this article.
     

Durham Road services (Angel 21, Night Angel N21, 22, 28B, 81):

Northbound (Towards Gateshead/ Newcastle)

  • No diversions will apply in this direction, but delays are expected.

Southbound (Away from Gateshead/ Newcastle)

  • Services will be diverted between High West Street-Civic Centre Durham Road-Saltwell Park. There will be no service to stops between these points.
  • If you normally use these bus stops, please use either the stops on the diverted route (Prince Consort Road-Bewick Road and Gateshead Library) or our free shuttle bus that is detailed at the bottom of this article.
     

Split Crow Road services (51, 52, VOLTRA 58, VOLTRA 58A): 

Northbound (Towards Gateshead/ Newcastle)

  • Services will be diverted between Split Crow Road-Deckham Terrace and Gateshead High Street. There will be no service to stops between these points.
  • If you normally use these bus stops, please use either the stops on the diverted route (Shipcote Terrace, Durham Road-Shipcote Lane, Durham Road-Hartington Street and High West Street-Bewick Road), or our free shuttle bus that is detailed at the bottom of this article

Eastbound (Away from Gateshead/ Newcastle)

  • Services will be diverted between Gateshead High Street and Split Crow Road-Fife Street. There will be no service to stops between these points.
  • If you normally use these bus stops, please use either the stops on the diverted route (Prince Consort Road-Bewick Road and Gateshead Library), or our free shuttle bus that is detailed at the bottom of this article.
     

Express Services

Scheduled stops on express services X1, X10, X21 and X58 will still be served, but these routes will be subject to delay as buses are diverted around the closures.
 

Shuttle Bus

During the closure period, we will be operating a free shuttle bus service (S1) to keep stops on Sunderland Road and Old Durham Road connected to Heworth and Gateshead Interchanges. This will operate every 15 minutes, 7 days a week, between 09:00 and 19:00.



Park Lane Roundabout 

Following the works at Five Bridges, demolition will commence at Park Lane roundabout. Our diversions plan for this second phase will be shared in due course.
