via Grangetown, Ryhope, New Seaham, Seaham and Dawdon. Services 61, 62, 62A and 63 also provide frequent departures between Sunderland and Grangetown.

  • Road closures for Sunderland City Runs affecting services in Sunderland City Centre

    17th May 2026

    To allow the safe hosting of the 2026 Sunderland City Runs events there will be various road closures in place.

    Services 35 & 56 will be unable to serve stops between Church Bank, Southwick and Sunderland Interchange from 08:00-16:00.  Buses will operate via Northern Way, Queen Alexandra Bridge, Pallion New Road and Trimdon Street to the City Centre.  Buses will not stop at stops on the diversionary route.

    Services 9 & 24 will be unable to serve stops between Sunderland Interchange and Fulwell Grange from 08:00 until 14:30. Buses will operate via Trimdon Street, Pallion New Road, Queen Alexandra Bridge, Northern Way, Church Bank, Southwick Green and Thompson Road to Fulwell Grange.  Buses will not stop on the diversionary route except for stops at Southwick Green.

    Services 9 & 56 will be unable to operate via St Mary's Boulevard between 06:00 & 08:00.  Buses will operate via John Street & Holmeside towards Sunderland.

    Services 60, 61, 62 & 63  will be unable to serve stops between Grangetown and the City Centre between 08:30 & 13:30.  Buses will operate via Queen Alexandra Road, Tunstall Road and Belvedere Road observing stand A in Sunderland interchange on journeys towards Pennywell.  

    The re-opening times of the closed roads are estimates and roads could re-open earlier.
