  • Tyne Bridge restoration - potential disruptions

    14th Apr 2024 - 20th Jun 2024

From 4th April 2024, the Tyne Bridge has been reduced to one lane in each direction to allow for a four-year programme of restoration works.

This reduction to one lane is likely to lead to an increase in traffic congestion on some roads in and around the centres of Newcastle and Gateshead, particularly at peak times (07:30-09:30 & 15:00-18:00). This could have an impact on any of our services that serve Newcastle, Gateshead or the Metrocentre.

We will be closely monitoring how this impacts our network. During times of significant congestion, some journeys may take longer, and we may regrettably need to curtail or cancel some journeys. We may also occasionally need to divert buses heading into or out of Newcastle city centre.

Cancelled or curtailed journeys will be reflected in our bus stop departure boards that can be viewed in our app or on our website, and we will post information about diversions on our service updates page.

During the initial few months of these works and until we understand more about the detailed impacts of these works on our services, we strongly advise customers to allow some extra time for their journeys, especially if travelling at peak times Monday to Friday.
