 Great North Run

Travel guide

With road closures as well as limited parking, public transport is the best way to get to or from the Great North Run for both runners and spectators. There will be extra bus services throughout the day to help you get around as quickly and easily as possible.

Race start (Newcastle): Travelling to the race start

The race start is about a 15 minute walk from Eldon Square and Haymarket bus stations in Newcastle city centre.

  • There’s a bus station at Haymarket, as well as buses going to nearby Eldon Square bus station and many on-street bus stops.
  • Special express R1 shuttle bus services will run from Bents Park to Newcastle regularly starting from 06:15am.
  • Buses will run regularly until around 5pm

Buses will be extremely busy and will be affected by increased levels of traffic congestion, so please leave plenty of time to get to the race start.

Race finish (South Shields): Getting home from the race finish

Buses will be very busy due to the number of people travelling, so please expect some slight delays on the way home.

Avoid the queues by having a meal or drink in South Shields before you head home.

  • Special express R1 shuttle bus services will run from Bents Park to Newcastle.
  • Buses will run regularly until around 5pm
  • Diversions are in place on local bus services due to road closures in the area - see full guide here.
