General Manager

Across Go North East we operate over 600 vehicles daily connecting passengers across the region with our local management teams across all our sites playing a fundamental role in ensuring our depot operations are thriving.

The Role

A vacancy has arisen for a General Manager to join our team of Senior Leaders across Go North East, the successful candidate will be responsible for both the day to day depot activities and take a strategic lead across their site.

Key Accountabilities

  • Working closely with Trade Union representatives at a local level, you’ll help create a harmonious workplace culture while delivering meaningful efficiencies.
  • Responsibility for driving revenue, managing costs, and maximising EBIT%/Profit lies with this role, with full ownership of P&L performance to influence business outcomes.
  • A strong focus on budgetary control and cost efficiency—particularly around driver hours—will help unlock new opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Supporting your team’s development is key, with regular Personal Development Reviews (PDRs)and ongoing assessment of training needs to ensure continued growth.
  • Identifying innovative ways to enhance systems and processes will be a regular part of your remit, as you lead and encourage creative thinking to support robust local change programmes.
  • Building strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders will be crucial to fostering collaboration and delivering shared goals.
  • Oversight of the full operational performance of the site, including supporting the engineering manager and their team, is a central aspect of this role.
  • Leading the preparation of monthly depot review packs and delivering engaging, insightful presentations will help drive continuous improvement and strategic alignment.

Person Specification 

  • Experience of leading, managing, motivating and developing high performing teams (100+ team members).
  • Demonstrable experience in creating a safe and continuously improving working environment - IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent safety management accreditation.
  • Capable of developing a depot specific strategy and translating it into a deliverable annual plan.
  • A strong commercial understanding, with experience managing a large geographic network.
  • Well-developed organisational, negotiating, decision- making, analytical and leadership skills.
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills.
  • A flexible and proactive approach to work.
  • Holder of Manager CPC or equivalent (or willing to obtain).
  • Experience managing in a PCV environment (desired but not essential).
