This operation, which took place on Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21, involved Officers and Special Constables from Northumbria Police's Road Policing Unit, carrying out patrol activity from one of our double-decker buses.

As a result, 26 drivers were reported for a range of offences which included failing to wear a seatbelt, having illegal registration plates, using a mobile phone, not being in proper control of their vehicle, and contravening traffic signs and signals.

Police Constable Andrew Clarke of Northumbria Police said: “We’ve had another very successful weekend of action with help from our transport partners – which has led to a string of reckless road users being reported for putting others at risk. Using a bus for this type of operation gives us a better view point, and has ultimately helped us to identify those flouting the rules of the road – and I’d like to thank Go North East for their support."

He said the targeted activity is carried out throughout the year against those who endanger the lives of other road users.

Ben Maxfield, Business Director at Go North East, said: “At Go North East we are dedicated to promoting safe driving and our own teams are trained to provide a safe and professional service to the public. To further our commitment to road safety, we are pleased to work with Northumbria Police on an initiative like this."
